Anthraquinones

These usually occur in plants as glycosides.

Examples of this group include rhubarb, senna and cascara. They are strong stimulating laxative that stimulate peristaltic movements in the bowel. These should not be used to treat constipation due to a spastic bowel as they will cause great pain. Do not use these long term and it would be advised to do so only under supervision from GP or qualified Medical Herbalist.
