Adapted from the work of the Institute of HeartMath in Boulder Creek, California, and cited from ‘Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom’ by Christiane Northrup, this technique can help to alter the hormones produced by the adrenal glands to a healthier balance. The technique has been shown over a 1 month period to increase levels of DHEA, when practiced regularly. This will have the effect of stabilising cortisol and adrenaline levels and increasing DHEA; increased DHEA, amongst other effects helps to improve energy and vitality, sleep, and mental clarity. It can help reduce PMS symptoms and helps recovery from acute stress.

When you are under stress or find yourself feeling fearful, angry, guilty, anxious etc. do the following:

1.Stop yourself and observe your emotional state

2. Name what is bothering you- maybe write it down

3.Focus your attention on your heart area(put your hand there if it helps you focus)

4.Shift your attention to a happy funny or uplifting event, person, time or place in your life and spend a few moments imagining it

5.Bring something to mind that makes you feel unconditional love or appreciationĀ  (usually a child or a pet). Hold that feeling for 15 seconds or more (again, it may help to hold hand over the heart area)

6.Notice how you have been able to shift out of the downward spiral of negativity and now feel more positive.
